India’s position as the world’s fifth-largest equity market is coming under pressure as Taiwan rapidly narrows the gap, driven by a powerful rally in semiconductor and artificial intelligence-related stocks.
According to exchange data, the total market capitalisation of companies listed on Taiwan’s exchanges climbed to approximately $4.89 trillion, only slightly below the $4.92 trillion valuation of companies listed on India’s National Stock Exchange of India.
The global rankings remain led by the United States, China, Japan, and Hong Kong.
India’s stock market has struggled throughout 2026, with the benchmark NIFTY 50 and BSE SENSEX falling about 8.5% and 10.8%, respectively. Analysts attribute the weakness to slowing corporate earnings growth, heavy foreign investor selling, and limited exposure to the global AI investment boom.
Meanwhile, Taiwan has benefited significantly from surging enthusiasm around semiconductor companies and artificial intelligence infrastructure spending.
Shares of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, commonly known as TSMC, have jumped more than 44% this year, helping lift the Taiwan Weighted Index by over 50% in 2026.
TSMC now represents roughly 42% of Taiwan’s benchmark index, highlighting the market’s heavy concentration around semiconductor and AI-linked stocks.
Investment-research firm Copley Fund Research said India has lost momentum among emerging-market investors after previously being viewed as one of the strongest growth stories in Asia.
The firm noted that India’s average weighting in emerging-market funds it tracks has dropped below 10% for the first time since 2021, well below the peak of 17.47% recorded in August 2024.
Geopolitical and macroeconomic concerns have also weighed on investor sentiment toward India. Analysts cited rising oil-price volatility, dependence on energy imports, tensions with Pakistan, uncertainty surrounding U.S. tariffs, and concerns over monsoon conditions as key risks.
Foreign portfolio investors have sold approximately $24.18 billion worth of Indian equities in 2026, surpassing the record outflows seen last year. In contrast, Taiwan has attracted nearly $25 billion in foreign inflows during the same period.
India’s weighting in the MSCI Global Standard Index has also declined sharply, falling to 12.3% from a peak of 21% in September 2024, further reducing passive investment flows into Indian equities.
