SpaceX IPO Could Test Tesla Stock as Musk Investors Face Capital Rotation Risk

A potential blockbuster IPO from SpaceX could create a rare “competition for capital” inside Elon Musk’s own investment universe, with implications for Tesla shareholders.

SpaceX is preparing for an initial public offering that could raise around $75 billion, valuing the company at $2 trillion or more, according to estimates. While that would mark one of the largest listings in market history, analysts say the key risk is not market absorption—but investor rotation.

Because many retail investors already hold Tesla shares, the IPO could encourage some to sell Tesla stock to fund allocations into SpaceX, temporarily pressuring Tesla’s share price.

However, analysts note that the scale of the offering is relatively small compared to daily trading in Tesla, which often exceeds $20 billion, suggesting any selling pressure is likely to be spread out rather than abrupt.

The report argues that Tesla has already proven resilient to large trading shocks, recovering quickly from previous volatility episodes, including politically driven selloffs.

Still, valuation remains a key concern for SpaceX. At an estimated 80x+ forward sales multiple, some analysts caution that IPO performance for similarly priced tech listings has historically been weak after initial debut pops.

In contrast, Tesla continues to trade at elevated multiples—around 200x forward earnings—despite ongoing questions about its core EV growth trajectory.

Investors are now watching whether capital flows into SpaceX will meaningfully affect Tesla demand, or whether Tesla’s next move will instead be driven by its AI and robotics pipeline, including robo-taxi expansion and Optimus humanoid robot development.

Tesla shares were last up 1.1% in premarket trading at $430.58, while broader equity futures also pointed higher.
