Tata Electronics Investigates Cybersecurity Breach as Alleged Apple and Tesla Files Appear Online

Tata Electronics has confirmed that it recently experienced a cybersecurity incident after researchers reported that a ransomware group had published thousands of files allegedly linked to the company and its customers, including Apple and Tesla.

The company said it detected the incident several weeks ago and immediately activated its cybersecurity response procedures.

“A few weeks ago, Tata Electronics identified a cybersecurity incident on some of our systems. Our response protocols were deployed immediately, and the incident has had no impact on our operations across businesses, which remain unaffected,” the company said in a statement.

Ransomware Group Claims Responsibility

The ransomware group World Leaks reportedly published more than 200,000 files totaling over 630 gigabytes on the dark web, according to cybersecurity researchers.

The group claims the stolen information came from Tata Electronics systems. Reuters reported that independent researchers reviewed portions of the data, although the authenticity of all documents has not been fully verified.

The leaked material allegedly includes:

  • Engineering specifications.
  • Manufacturing documents.
  • Internal emails.
  • Event logs.
  • Employee records.
  • Passport copies of some employees.
  • Product-related documents linked to Apple and Tesla.

Apple Investigating the Incident

AppleApple is reportedly conducting its own investigation into the incident.

According to sources familiar with the matter, Tata received a ransom demand related to the breach. Tata declined to comment on the alleged demand, while Apple has not publicly responded.

Several files reportedly contained labels such as:

  • “This document contains proprietary and confidential information of Apple Inc.”
  • “Information contained herein is deemed confidential, proprietary, and a trade secret of Tesla Inc.”

Potential Tesla Documents Also Reported

TeslaTesla documents were also allegedly included in the data release.

Researchers reported finding files referencing:

  • Tesla Model Y charge-port components.
  • Project Highland, Tesla's internal codename for the redesigned Model 3.
  • Manufacturing and assembly specifications.

Tesla has not publicly commented on the reports.

India’s Growing Role in Apple’s Supply Chain

The incident comes at a sensitive time for Apple’s manufacturing expansion in India.

Tata has rapidly become one of Apple’s most important production partners outside China as the company diversifies its global supply chain. The company now reportedly accounts for roughly one-third of iPhone production in India, while FoxconnFoxconn produces the remainder.

Tata's manufacturing operations in Hosur and other facilities play a significant role in India's ambitions to become a major electronics manufacturing hub.

Part of a Broader Cybersecurity Challenge

The incident also highlights growing cybersecurity risks facing global manufacturers and supply chains.

Tata's automotive subsidiary, Jaguar Land RoverJaguar Land Rover, previously experienced a cyberattack that disrupted production operations.

As manufacturers increasingly digitize operations and handle sensitive intellectual property from major technology companies, they have become attractive targets for ransomware groups seeking financial gain.

What Happens Next

Several key questions remain unanswered:

  • The full scope of the data exposure.
  • Whether sensitive customer information was compromised.
  • The authenticity of all leaked documents.
  • Whether any ransom payments have been demanded or made.
  • Potential impacts on customers and suppliers.

While Tata says operations remain unaffected, the investigation by the company, its customers, and cybersecurity experts is likely to continue as authorities assess the extent of the breach and its implications for one of India's fastest-growing electronics manufacturers.
