Back-to-school shopping season is arriving earlier than ever, with major retailers launching discounts weeks before many students have even finished summer vacation.
Retailers including Walmart, Target, Amazon, and Staples are rolling out promotions on school supplies, electronics, dorm furniture, and backpacks as consumers continue to deal with higher living costs and inflation.
Shoppers Begin Buying Earlier
Many families are no longer waiting until the final weeks before school starts. Instead, they are purchasing supplies whenever discounts become available.
Stephanie Peyton, a school administrator and mother of three in Phoenix, said rising costs have changed how her family shops.
"The way I used to do it, the Thursday before school we popped in the car and did it all at once. We just can't do that anymore."
Consumers are increasingly watching for deals months in advance as household budgets remain under pressure from inflation and higher prices.
Retailers Move Up Promotions
Major retailers are aggressively targeting early shoppers:
- Walmart is promoting dorm furniture, laptops, and school essentials during its summer sales event.
- Target is offering discounts on backpacks, pens, and school supplies.
- Amazon is featuring back-to-school and college shopping lists during Prime Day promotions.
- Staples has launched early summer sales focused on school supplies.
Retailers say earlier promotions help spread demand over a longer period and allow shoppers to manage their budgets more effectively.
Inflation Changes Shopping Habits
According to the National Retail Federation, approximately 67% of back-to-school shoppers had already started buying items by early July last year, up from 55% the previous year.
Consumers are increasingly motivated by:
- Higher prices.
- Concerns about inventory shortages.
- Fear of missing discounts.
- The desire to spread expenses over several months.
Many shoppers now purchase items whenever they see attractive deals rather than waiting until the school year approaches.
Retailers Extend Seasonal Shopping
The trend reflects a broader shift in retail, where major shopping seasons continue to start earlier.
Summer sales events, holiday promotions, and seasonal shopping periods have all expanded. Retailers now see shopping for Christmas, Halloween, and back-to-school items beginning much earlier than in previous years.
Walmart executives noted that some consumers have already started shopping for Halloween products while summer is still underway.
School Spending Remains Significant
According to previous NRF estimates:
- Families with K-12 students planned to spend an average of $858 on clothing, electronics, shoes, and school supplies.
- College students and their families planned to spend roughly $1,326.
Because back-to-school purchases are often essential expenses rather than discretionary spending, retailers compete aggressively for these dollars.
Different Regions, Different Timelines
School calendars vary widely across the United States.
Students in several Southern states often return to school in early August, while many districts in the Northeast begin classes after Labor Day. This creates a longer shopping season that allows retailers to target consumers over several months.
What Retailers Are Watching
Early-season purchases usually focus on:
- Laptops and electronics.
- Dorm furniture.
- Backpacks.
- Bulk classroom supplies.
Closer to the first day of school, retailers typically see a surge in demand for:
- Pens.
- Notebooks.
- Folders.
- Basic school supplies.
The 2026 back-to-school season may also provide retailers with an early indication of consumer spending strength ahead of the crucial holiday shopping period later in the year.
