Disney’s New Star Wars Film Delivers Franchise’s Weakest Opening Under Disney Era

Walt Disney Co.’s newest Star Wars movie, “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” has posted the weakest domestic opening weekend of any Star Wars film released since Disney acquired the franchise.

The movie generated an estimated $82 million at the North American box office during its first three days in theatres, falling below previous Star Wars releases under Disney’s ownership. Despite the disappointing debut, the opening slightly exceeded analyst expectations of around $80 million.

The film is based on Disney+ hit series “The Mandalorian,” which has become the streaming platform’s most-watched original program with more than 1.3 billion hours viewed globally. However, the strong streaming success did not fully translate into theatrical demand.

“The Mandalorian and Grogu” also opened below 2018’s “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” which earned $84 million during its opening weekend and was previously considered one of the franchise’s weaker theatrical performances.

The latest release marks the first Star Wars movie to arrive in theatres in seven years, increasing expectations among fans and investors for a stronger box office return.

Analysts still expect the film to surpass $100 million in domestic ticket sales over the four-day Memorial Day holiday weekend in the United States.

Internationally, the movie added another $63 million in box office revenue during its opening weekend.

Despite the softer theatrical launch, Star Wars remains one of Disney’s most valuable entertainment franchises, generating more than $1 billion annually through movies, streaming, merchandise, licensing, and theme park attractions.

Meanwhile, Disney shares continue to face pressure in recent years. Walt Disney Co. stock has declined roughly 42% over the past five years and currently trades near $103 per share.

Investors are closely watching whether future Star Wars projects can successfully balance streaming popularity with box office performance as Disney continues expanding the franchise across multiple platforms.
