Singapore Dollar Holds Steady as Markets Await Key U.S. Inflation Data

The Singapore dollar traded within a narrow range against the U.S. dollar as investors awaited the release of key U.S. economic data, particularly the core Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index, which is closely watched by the Federal Reserve as a measure of inflation.

According to strategists at OCBC, financial markets are focused on whether the inflation data will influence expectations for future U.S. interest rate decisions. A stronger-than-expected core PCE reading could reinforce expectations that interest rates will remain higher for longer, potentially driving the U.S. dollar higher against major currencies, including the Singapore dollar.

On the other hand, a softer or in-line inflation reading could ease concerns about persistent inflation and provide some relief for currencies that have recently weakened against the U.S. dollar.

Technical indicators currently suggest that the U.S. dollar maintains bullish momentum against the Singapore dollar. However, OCBC analysts noted that the relative strength index has moved into overbought territory, indicating that the recent gains in the U.S. dollar may be becoming stretched.

As a result, analysts believe that some moderation or consolidation in the USD/SGD exchange rate could occur in the near term, particularly if upcoming inflation data fail to provide fresh support for the U.S. currency.

The U.S. dollar was little changed at 1.2968 Singapore dollars, according to LSEG data, as investors remained cautious ahead of the important economic releases. The outcome of the inflation report could determine the next direction for the currency pair and influence broader market expectations regarding Federal Reserve policy.
