Inflation and Iran Conflict Keep Investors on Edge
U.S. Treasury yields moved lower on Wednesday after a sharp bond market selloff earlier in the week, as investors continued monitoring inflation risks and escalating tensions involving Iran.
The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield fell to around 4.63% after reaching its highest level since January 2025 during Tuesday’s trading. Meanwhile, the 30-year Treasury bond yield — often viewed as a key indicator of long-term fiscal and geopolitical risk — eased slightly after briefly touching its highest level since the 2008 financial crisis.
The recent volatility in bond markets has been driven largely by rising energy prices and uncertainty surrounding stalled peace talks between the United States and Iran. Brent crude oil prices remained above $108 per barrel after recently climbing as high as $111.
Analysts say investors are increasingly concerned that elevated oil prices could fuel inflation and force the Federal Reserve to keep interest rates higher for longer.
According to market strategist Tim Saurmelch of SEI Investments, rising Treasury yields are beginning to affect broader financial markets, including stocks.
“We’re at a point with yields and the bond market selloff where the equity market is starting to take notice.”
Investors are now pricing in a growing possibility that the Federal Reserve could maintain current interest rates for an extended period, with some traders even expecting a potential rate increase later this year.
The 2-year Treasury yield, which closely reflects expectations for Federal Reserve policy, also moved lower after recent gains. Meanwhile, the spread between 2-year and 10-year Treasury yields remained closely watched as an indicator of future economic conditions.
Analysts believe inflation expectations linked to energy prices are currently one of the biggest forces driving Treasury market volatility. If oil prices continue rising due to Middle East tensions, bond yields could remain elevated despite growing concerns about economic growth.
