Carbon dioxide emissions from โother industryโ sources represent a broad category of industrial activities outside traditional power generation and transportation. These emissions often come from manufacturing, heavy industrial processing, chemical production, construction materials, and various industrial energy uses. As industrialization expands across emerging economies, emissions from these sectors continue to rise and play a major role in global climate change.
The 2023 data from Our World in Data (OWID) shows that industrial emissions are highly concentrated among a few large manufacturing economies. ๐จ๐ณ China overwhelmingly dominates global CO2 emissions from other industrial sources, accounting for more than half of the world total. This reflects Chinaโs enormous industrial base, including steel production, cement manufacturing, electronics, chemicals, and export-oriented manufacturing. Other major contributors include ๐ท๐บ Russia, ๐บ๐ธ United States, ๐ฏ๐ต Japan, ๐ฐ๐ท South Korea, and ๐ฎ๐ณ India, all of which maintain large industrial and manufacturing sectors.
The data also highlights the unequal distribution of industrial emissions worldwide. Many smaller or less industrialized economies contribute almost nothing to global industrial CO2 emissions, while a limited number of advanced and emerging economies account for the majority of pollution. This concentration means that global emission-reduction efforts will depend heavily on cleaner manufacturing technologies, industrial efficiency improvements, and decarbonization policies in the worldโs largest industrial powers.

Chinaโs overwhelming lead reflects the scale of its industrial economy, which produces a massive share of the worldโs manufactured goods. Industries such as cement, steel, aluminum, petrochemicals, and electronics require huge amounts of energy, much of which still comes from fossil fuels. Similarly, economies like ๐น๐ผ Taiwan and ๐ฐ๐ท South Korea are major hubs for semiconductor manufacturing, advanced electronics, and industrial exports, contributing to their relatively high shares despite smaller populations.
Industrial emissions are increasingly becoming one of the hardest sectors to decarbonize globally. Unlike electricity generation, many industrial processes require extremely high heat or chemical reactions that are difficult to replace with renewable energy alone. As governments pursue net-zero targets, investment in cleaner industrial technologies, carbon capture systems, hydrogen fuel, and low-carbon manufacturing will become essential to reducing future global emissions.
