Brokerage Turns Positive on Large Banks; SBI Highlights FY27 ₹60,000 Crore Fundraising Plan

A brokerage has turned constructive on large-cap banks over the next 6–12 months, citing expectations of easing inflation, a firmer rupee, and an improving interest-rate environment. State Bank of India Sponsored GDR RegS (SBIN) has been highlighted as a preferred pick within the sector due to its strong balance sheet profile and funding flexibility.

The outlook reflects a broader expectation that macroeconomic conditions will become more supportive for banking sector earnings, particularly as lower inflation could ease funding costs while currency stability may reduce external pressure on capital flows.

In a key development, SBI’s board has approved a significant borrowing plan for FY27, authorizing the bank to raise up to ₹60,000 crore through long-term bonds, including Basel III-compliant Additional Tier-1 (AT1) and Tier-2 instruments. The fundraising may be executed via public offerings or private placements and could include participation from both domestic and international investors, subject to regulatory and shareholder approvals.

The proposed capital raise underscores SBI’s strategy to strengthen its capital base ahead of future credit growth opportunities while maintaining compliance with regulatory capital requirements. Analysts view such large-scale funding programs as supportive of long-term lending expansion, particularly in an environment where credit demand remains steady and macro conditions are gradually stabilizing.
