U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has raised concerns with Dutch semiconductor equipment maker ASML over reports that one of its advanced chipmaking machines may have reached China in potential violation of export restrictions, according to a Bloomberg News report.
Lutnick reportedly conveyed these concerns during a series of meetings with senior ASML executives, reflecting ongoing U.S. scrutiny of global semiconductor supply chains and efforts to limit China’s access to cutting-edge chip manufacturing technology.
ASML has rejected the allegations, stressing that its most advanced extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography systems have never been shipped to China. The company emphasized that EUV machines are highly complex, extremely large—roughly the size of a school bus and weighing around 180 tons—and require continuous on-site support from ASML engineers, making unauthorized transfer highly unlikely.
An ASML spokesperson reiterated that no EUV machine, nor any related components specifically designed for EUV systems, has ever been supplied to China. The U.S. Commerce Department, ASML, and the White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment outside business hours.
The report comes amid heightened geopolitical tension over semiconductor technology. Earlier reporting has noted that Chinese researchers have been working on developing prototype EUV systems, reportedly involving former ASML engineers, highlighting Beijing’s long-term push to achieve self-sufficiency in advanced chip manufacturing.
