HSBC Expects Singapore Central Bank to Delay Policy Tightening Until October

The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) is likely to postpone further monetary policy tightening until October rather than acting at its July meeting, according to economists at HSBC.

In a recent research note, HSBC said Singapore's inflation environment has remained relatively stable despite the recent surge in global energy prices. The bank believes the central bank may prefer to wait for clearer evidence of inflationary pressures before adjusting policy again.

Singapore's monetary policy differs from many other central banks because the MAS manages the Singapore dollar's exchange rate rather than setting traditional interest rates. Changes to the policy band are used to control inflation and support economic stability.

According to HSBC, the effects of higher oil prices have not yet fully appeared in Singapore's inflation data. Historically, changes in global energy prices tend to influence the country's core inflation with a lag of approximately one quarter. As a result, the impact of recent increases in energy costs is expected to become more visible during the third quarter of the year.

The economists noted that inflation has remained well contained so far, reducing the urgency for immediate action at the upcoming July policy review. Instead, the MAS may choose to monitor incoming economic data over the next few months before deciding whether additional tightening measures are necessary.

HSBC believes the central bank is unlikely to implement consecutive policy tightening moves within a short period. A delay until October would provide policymakers with additional time to assess the effects of energy prices, domestic demand conditions, and broader economic developments.

Investors and currency markets closely monitor MAS decisions because adjustments to Singapore's exchange-rate policy can significantly influence the Singapore dollar and the country's inflation outlook.

While the possibility of further tightening remains on the table, HSBC's outlook suggests that policymakers may adopt a more cautious approach, balancing inflation risks against economic growth considerations.

The October policy meeting could therefore become a key event for financial markets, particularly if rising energy costs begin to feed more noticeably into Singapore's core inflation during the third quarter.
