World Bank Releases Global Poverty Projections Through 2028

The World Bank has released updated projections for the international poverty rate — measured at $2.15 per day in 2017 purchasing power parity terms — covering 112 economies through 2028.

The data highlights sharp differences in living standards across regions, with several advanced economies expected to maintain near-zero extreme poverty levels, while many low-income and conflict-affected nations continue to face severe hardship.

Several African and fragile economies are expected to record the world’s highest extreme poverty levels:

  • Madagascar — 83%
  • South Sudan — 82%
  • Burundi — 73%
  • Sudan — 69%
  • Central African Republic — 68%
  • Liberia — 64%
  • Somalia — 56%
  • Congo, Dem. Rep. — 51%
  • Haiti — 49%
  • Mozambique — 49%
  • Tanzania — 48%
  • Zimbabwe — 42%
  • Nigeria — 42%
  • Pakistan — 21%

Major Emerging Economies

Several large emerging markets are projected to maintain moderate-to-low poverty levels by 2028:

  • India — 1%
  • China — 0.25%
  • Brazil — 3%

Sub-Saharan Africa Remains Most Vulnerable

The projections show Sub-Saharan Africa continuing to account for the highest concentration of global extreme poverty. Countries such as Uganda (42%), Malawi (77%), Mali (32%), Niger (33%), and Zambia (42%) remain under significant economic pressure.

The World Bank said the projections are based on assumptions related to growth, inflation, labor markets, commodity prices, and geopolitical conditions, meaning forecasts may shift as global economic conditions evolve.
