Vestas Halts Plans for Major Wind Turbine Factory in Poland Amid Weak European Demand

Danish wind turbine manufacturer Vestas has announced the suspension of its plans to build its largest factory in Poland, citing weaker-than-expected demand for offshore wind energy across Europe. The company confirmed the decision in an emailed statement to Reuters on Saturday.

Vestas had unveiled the project last year, intending to establish its second offshore wind turbine plant in Poland. The facility, projected to create over 1,000 jobs, was set to manufacture turbine blades and begin operations in 2026. However, the company has now paused the project, explaining that the offshore wind market has not grown as rapidly as anticipated.

“Due to lower than projected demand for offshore wind in Europe, we have decided to pause the development,” Vestas stated, adding that it will “continue to invest in a local manufacturing footprint where the offshore wind market volume and certainty allow.”

The decision was first reported by the Financial Times and marks a setback for Europe’s broader renewable energy ambitions, which have recently faced headwinds from rising costs, supply chain disruptions, and uncertain government policies.

Poland, one of Europe’s largest coal-dependent economies, has been gradually transitioning toward renewable energy. In 2024, nearly 30% of the country’s electricity was generated from renewable sources — a notable improvement, though coal continues to dominate the energy mix.

The political landscape has also played a role in shaping Poland’s renewable energy trajectory. In August, President Karol Nawrocki vetoed a bill that aimed to relax restrictions on building onshore wind farms. Shortly afterward, Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced plans to “radically increase onshore wind capacity”, suggesting that the government is seeking new avenues to accelerate green energy development despite recent policy hurdles.

While Vestas’ decision underscores current market uncertainties, it also reflects a cautious recalibration within the wind energy sector — balancing short-term demand fluctuations with long-term sustainability goals. The pause, analysts say, may only be temporary as Europe’s energy transition efforts continue to evolve in the face of geopolitical and economic challenges.
