Ukraine has targeted a Russian chemical plant using UK-supplied Storm Shadow long-range missiles, the Ukrainian military announced on Tuesday. The strike, which the armed forces called a “successful hit,” reportedly penetrated Russian air defense systems, though officials are still assessing the full outcome of the “massive combined missile and air strike.”
The targeted facility, the Bryansk Chemical Plant, is described by Kyiv as a critical part of Russia’s military-industrial complex, producing gunpowder, explosives, and rocket fuel components used in ammunition and missiles deployed against Ukrainian territory.
The Kremlin has repeatedly warned Western countries against providing Ukraine with weapons capable of long-range attacks. Nevertheless, Kyiv maintains that hitting such strategic targets is essential to weakening Moscow’s war capabilities.
International Response
The strike coincided with a renewed pledge from European leaders, including UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, to increase pressure on Russia’s economy and defense sector. A joint statement co-signed by leaders from Ukraine, Germany, France, Italy, Poland, Denmark, Finland, the EU, and Norway emphasized that Ukraine must be in the strongest position before, during, and after any ceasefire.
Ongoing Tensions
Meanwhile, Russian forces carried out an overnight air attack on Kyiv, with explosions reported across the city, according to mayor Vitali Klitschko. Witnesses noted that air defense systems were actively engaged.
The attacks come amid ongoing diplomatic maneuvering. Last week, US President Donald Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House, where Trump indicated he was not ready to supply Tomahawk cruise missiles to Kyiv. Plans for a potential Trump-Putin summit in Budapest were subsequently put on hold, with Trump citing Moscow’s refusal to halt fighting along the current front line as a key obstacle.
The missile strike highlights Kyiv’s continued reliance on long-range Western weaponry to target strategic Russian assets while ongoing diplomatic efforts aim to stabilize the conflict.
