The United States has introduced stricter visa policies under the Trump administration. According to a new directive issued last Friday, individuals with chronic illnesses such as diabetes, obesity, and cancer may face greater difficulty entering the country.
Visas are likely to be denied for applicants who may require expensive medical treatment or rely on government assistance. Conditions such as heart disease, respiratory problems, cancer, diabetes, metabolic disorders, neurological illnesses, and mental health issues can potentially cost millions of dollars in care. Obesity will also be scrutinized, particularly when associated with asthma, sleep disorders, and high blood pressure.
This move represents a review of the strict health policies from Trump’s first term. In 2019, immigrants were compelled to forego benefits such as Medicaid as part of similar measures.
