Trump Announces Immediate End to Trade Negotiations with Canada Over Controversial Ad

US President Donald Trump has announced the immediate termination of all trade negotiations with Canada, citing an advert produced by the Ontario government featuring former President Ronald Reagan discussing tariffs.

In a post on Truth Social late Thursday, Trump stated: “Based on their egregious behavior, ALL TRADE NEGOTIATIONS WITH CANADA ARE HEREBY TERMINATED.”

The dispute arises after Canada released a minute-long video using Reagan’s 1987 national radio address on foreign trade, which included footage of the New York Stock Exchange and US-Canadian flags. In the audio, Reagan warned that high tariffs could trigger trade wars and harm American workers and consumers over the long term.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford defended the campaign, valued at CAD 75 million, writing, “We’ll never stop making the case against American tariffs on Canada.”

The Ronald Reagan Foundation criticized the advert, stating that the Ontario government had used “selective audio and video” without permission, misrepresenting the former president’s remarks. The foundation is reportedly reviewing legal options.

Trump has previously imposed a 35% levy on Canadian imports, with exemptions under the USMCA free trade agreement. He has also introduced sector-specific tariffs, including 50% on metals and 25% on automobiles, measures that have caused job losses and pressure on businesses in Canada.

This announcement marks a significant escalation in US-Canada trade tensions, following months of ongoing disputes over tariffs and market access. China’s embassy in Washington has also previously used a Reagan clip to question the global impact of Trump’s tariffs.

The situation is ongoing, and updates will be provided as more details emerge.
