Crypto Market Turmoil Triggers $20 Billion in Liquidations, Highlighting Bitcoin Risks

Friday’s market volatility in the cryptocurrency sector led to nearly $20 billion in liquidations, marking one of the largest events in crypto history. The surge in forced liquidations underscores the risks associated with high leverage, particularly in Bitcoin (BTCUSD) trading.

Despite the turmoil, Bitcoin is trading around $114,680, after reaching a record high of $112,000 in July 2025. The rally has been supported by strong inflows into spot Bitcoin ETFs and growing institutional interest, reflecting continued confidence in Bitcoin as a key digital asset.

Meanwhile, Bitcoin’s open interest fell by $12 billion to $35 billion, signaling a sharp decline in derivatives positioning due to macroeconomic uncertainty and forced liquidations. The event highlights both the volatility of leveraged crypto markets and the resilience of Bitcoin amid broader market stress.
