Australia’s private sector credit growth remained steady at 0.7% month-over-month in April 2026, according to a delayed Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) report. The figure slightly beat market expectations of 0.6%, signaling continued resilience in lending activity despite high interest rates.
On a yearly basis, credit growth eased slightly to 8.0% from 8.1%, but overall conditions remained stable across key lending segments.
Housing credit, which accounts for around 62% of total lending, rose 0.6% during the month. Investor lending was the strongest performer, increasing 0.9% month-over-month and pushing annual growth to 10.2%, the first double-digit reading since 2015.
Owner-occupier credit also remained steady, rising 0.5% on the month and 6.2% year-on-year. Business credit, which makes up about 34% of total private credit, increased 0.7%, while other personal credit—about 4% of the total—rose just 0.1%, marking one of its weakest performances since late 2024.
Looking ahead, economists expect credit growth to gradually slow as higher energy prices, persistent inflation, and tighter monetary policy from the RBA weigh on borrowing demand.
