France has summoned all state prosecutors to a national meeting next week following the discovery of a body in the case of an 11-year-old girl whose disappearance has sparked widespread criticism of judicial failures and missed intervention opportunities.

The girl, identified only as Lyhanna, went missing on May 29 in the southern French town of Fleurance after leaving school in the afternoon. Authorities have arrested the father of one of her classmates, who had previously faced multiple complaints of sexual assault against children.

President Emmanuel Macron, speaking at a summit in Montenegro, said the case raises serious questions about systemic failures. “We can't look at the faces of her family members and tell ourselves that everything went all right,” he said.

The case has triggered political reaction across the spectrum, with figures from both the right and left arguing it highlights deeper structural problems in France’s justice system, particularly in protecting women and children from sexual violence. Feminist groups also pointed to broader systemic strain, arguing that rape and sexual assault cases often face long delays and overwhelming caseloads.

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu met Interior Minister Laurent Nunez and Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin to review the case. Darmanin confirmed that his ministry and the Interior Ministry would jointly investigate potential procedural failures, including whether earlier warnings about the suspect were properly acted upon. Findings are expected to be made public.

France’s Justice Ministry announced that all prosecutors will gather in Paris on Monday morning to review the handling of the case.

A family lawyer said the parents’ grief and anger “cannot be expressed,” while the suspect’s legal representatives stressed that he must be presumed innocent pending due process.
