Tesla Inc. shares received a significant boost on Friday after JPMorgan sharply raised its price target on the electric vehicle maker and upgraded its rating on the stock.

The investment bank increased its Tesla price target to $475 from $145 and upgraded the stock to "Neutral" from "Underweight." The move reflects JPMorgan's growing confidence that Tesla's future growth extends far beyond its electric vehicle business.

Tesla shares traded modestly higher in premarket trading following the announcement.

Why JPMorgan Turned More Bullish

JPMorgan believes Tesla is evolving into a leader in what it calls "physical AI" — the integration of artificial intelligence into real-world products such as autonomous vehicles, robotics, and intelligent machines.

According to the firm, Tesla's combination of large-scale manufacturing capabilities, vertically integrated software and hardware systems, and rapid technological innovation gives it a competitive advantage that few companies can match.

JPMorgan argues that the market is not fully valuing Tesla's long-term opportunities in emerging technologies.

Long-Term Growth Outlook

The bank expects Tesla to reach a major earnings inflection point around 2028, with annual earnings growth potentially approaching 50% through 2030 and beyond.

While JPMorgan acknowledges that Tesla's current valuation appears expensive based on near-term earnings, it believes investors should focus on the company's future businesses, including autonomous driving, robotics, and AI-powered services.

These initiatives are not expected to contribute meaningfully to financial results until the latter part of the decade, but JPMorgan sees them as key drivers of long-term value.

European Sales Continue to Improve

Tesla's performance in Europe has also shown signs of strength.

According to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA), Tesla sold 9,169 vehicles in the European Union during April, representing a 67% increase from the same month last year.

Across the European Union, EFTA markets, and the United Kingdom, Tesla delivered 10,654 vehicles, up 47% year over year. The company's share of the battery-electric vehicle market also increased from 0.6% to 0.9%.

The growth marks Tesla's third consecutive month of rising sales in the region.

Investor Sentiment Remains Mixed

Despite JPMorgan's optimistic outlook, retail investor sentiment remains divided. Some investors note that Tesla's long-term valuation depends heavily on the successful commercialization of autonomous driving technology and robotics over the next several years.

Tesla shares are down approximately 7% year-to-date but remain up around 26% over the past 12 months.

JPMorgan's upgrade highlights a growing debate among investors: whether Tesla should be valued primarily as an automaker or as a leading artificial intelligence and robotics company with significant long-term growth potential.
