Prime Minister Anthony Albanese dismissed concerns on Sunday that Australia’s ambassador in Washington, Kevin Rudd, was causing diplomatic issues after U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly criticized him.
Albanese, a supporter of Rudd, praised the former Labor prime minister’s work, calling him a “fantastic” envoy. He described Trump’s remarks at a Washington summit—that he “does not like” Rudd—as “light-hearted.”
Rudd had previously called Trump “the most destructive president in history” in 2020 but deleted the comment when appointed ambassador. Albanese said Rudd’s role is not a problem, highlighting his efforts to build support for the AUKUS nuclear submarine deal and prepare for successful talks with Trump.
Conservative opposition leaders had called for Rudd’s removal following Trump’s initial comments. Rudd, who served as prime minister in 2007 and 2013, is recognized for his Mandarin skills and progressive policies.
