Warner Music Group Settles AI Music Lawsuit, Sells Songkick to Suno

Warner Music Group (WMG) announced on Tuesday that it has reached a settlement with AI music startup Suno, resolving its copyright lawsuit. The partnership aims to “open new frontiers in music creation, interaction, and discovery” while ensuring compensation and protection for artists, songwriters, and the wider creative community.

As part of the deal, WMG has sold Songkick, a live music and concert-discovery platform, to Suno for an undisclosed amount. WMG originally acquired Songkick’s app and brand in 2017, while Live Nation later purchased the ticketing business. Suno plans to continue Songkick as a fan-focused platform.

The agreement allows Suno to launch advanced, licensed AI music models next year, replacing its current technology. Users with paid accounts will be able to download audio, while free-tier users will be limited to playing and sharing music created on the platform. WMG artists and songwriters retain full control over how their names, images, likenesses, voices, and compositions are used in AI-generated content. WMG’s roster includes Lady Gaga, Coldplay, The Weeknd, and Sabrina Carpenter.

“This landmark pact with Suno is a victory for the creative community that benefits everyone,” said WMG CEO Robert Kyncl. “With Suno rapidly scaling, both in users and monetization, we’ve seized this opportunity to shape models that expand revenue and deliver new fan experiences.”

The settlement follows WMG’s recent resolution with AI music startup Udio, signaling a shift in how major labels are approaching AI music technology. Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment are also reportedly negotiating licensing deals with Suno and Udio.

In a boost to the AI music industry, Suno recently raised $250 million in a Series C funding round at a $2.45 billion post-money valuation. Investors include Menlo Ventures, Nvidia’s NVentures, Hallwood Media, Lightspeed, and Matrix.
