India is emerging as the most favorable destination in Asia for data centers seeking clean and reliable power, according to analysts at BMI, a Fitch Solutions unit. The country’s supportive policy framework allows data centers to access renewable energy through multiple procurement options, making green energy adoption both cost-effective and dependable.
Analysts note that captive renewable energy projects benefit from exemptions on cross-subsidy and certain additional surcharges, further enhancing the economic feasibility of clean-power operations. Such measures reduce operational costs while ensuring sustainability, giving India a competitive edge over its regional peers.
Looking ahead, BMI estimates that less than 10% of India’s projected renewable-energy output growth over the next five years will be required to meet the additional power needs of the booming data center sector. This implies substantial headroom for other industries to leverage renewable energy, supporting the country’s broader economic and environmental goals.
As demand for data storage, cloud computing, and AI infrastructure rises, India’s favorable regulatory and renewable energy landscape positions it to capture a significant share of the regional data-center market while advancing its clean-energy ambitions.
