In a move set to redefine India’s digital landscape, Google announced Thursday that it will offer its Gemini AI service for free to more than 500 million Reliance Jio users, marking one of the largest-scale artificial intelligence rollouts in the world.
A Landmark Partnership in India’s AI Journey
The U.S. tech giant has signed a major agreement with Reliance Intelligence, a joint venture between Reliance Industries and Meta, to provide access to Google’s AI Pro plan — which includes the advanced Gemini 2.5 Pro model, NotebookLM for study and research, and 2 TB of cloud storage, among other premium features.
The initiative underscores India’s growing importance as a global hub for AI adoption and innovation.
“I’m excited for how this partnership will help expand access to AI across India,” said Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet.
Mukesh Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Industries, added that his company aims to make India “AI-empowered” through long-term collaborations with global tech leaders like Google.
Phased Rollout and Early Access
The rollout of the Gemini AI services — valued at ₹35,100 ($396) per user — will be conducted in phases. Initially, early access will be given to 18- to 25-year-olds on unlimited Jio 5G plans for 18 months.
After that, the program will expand to Jio’s entire user base — more than 500 million subscribers — making it one of the largest AI distribution campaigns ever undertaken by a single company.
Why India Matters for AI Expansion
With 377 million Gen Z consumers driving an estimated $860 billion in annual spending — projected to reach $2 trillion by 2035 — India has emerged as the world’s most dynamic digital market, according to a report by the Boston Consulting Group.
The country also leads globally in social media engagement, boasting:
- 467 million YouTube users
- 413.8 million Instagram users
- 350+ million Facebook users
- Over 500 million WhatsApp users
This massive digital audience presents a unique opportunity for AI platforms like Gemini to reach users at scale, shaping how young Indians study, create, and communicate.
The Growing AI Race Among Indian Telecoms
The Google–Jio deal comes on the heels of similar partnerships. In July 2025, India’s second-largest telecom operator Bharti Airtel teamed up with Perplexity AI to provide its 360 million customers with free access to Perplexity Pro, a service priced at $200 annually worldwide.
Airtel’s campaign, promoted through Indian influencers on social media, successfully showcased real-world AI use cases — from education to business productivity — signaling a broader shift in how telecoms are becoming AI distributors.
Rising Competition: OpenAI Enters the Scene
Adding to the AI race, OpenAI reportedly announced plans to make its ChatGPT Go plan free for Indian users starting November 4. Previously offered at ₹399 per month, the plan’s free availability marks OpenAI’s most aggressive market expansion yet.
The company is also planning to build a 1-gigawatt data center in India, reflecting its commitment to strengthen AI infrastructure in the world’s fastest-growing internet economy.
A Defining Moment for Digital India
By combining Google’s cutting-edge AI tools with Reliance Jio’s massive 5G network, this partnership represents a turning point in India’s AI revolution.
For Google, it’s a chance to capture the world’s largest digital user base and integrate Gemini into the daily lives of millions. For India, it’s a powerful step toward becoming an AI-driven nation, where innovation, accessibility, and affordability converge on a historic scale.
