World’s Largest Gold Producers in 2024

Gold production remains heavily concentrated among a small group of mining powers led by China, Russia, and Australia. But one of the biggest shifts in the global gold market is Africa’s growing role, with the continent now accounting for nearly one-quarter of global mine supply.

Based on estimates from the World Gold Council, global gold mine production reached approximately 3,661 tonnes in 2024.

China Maintains Global Leadership

China remained the world’s largest gold producer in 2024, producing 380.2 tonnes and accounting for more than 10% of total global output. The country has dominated global gold mining for more than a decade thanks to extensive domestic reserves, large-scale mining operations, and strong state support for resource development.

Russia held onto second place despite geopolitical tensions and sanctions, while Australia continued to benefit from its vast mineral reserves and mature mining industry.

Africa Emerges as a Global Gold Powerhouse

Africa has become one of the world’s most important gold-producing regions. Ghana ranked as the continent’s largest producer with 140.6 tonnes, while Mali and South Africa also remained major contributors.

Countries including Burkina Faso, Sudan, Tanzania, and Côte d’Ivoire have significantly expanded production over the last decade as foreign mining investment increased across the continent.

Gold exports are critically important for many African economies, helping support government revenues, foreign exchange reserves, and employment. However, political instability, security concerns, and infrastructure challenges continue to affect mining operations in several regions.

Despite these risks, Africa remains one of the fastest-growing gold mining regions globally.

The Americas Continue to Play a Major Role

The Americas remain a cornerstone of global gold supply. Canada produced more than 202 tonnes in 2024, making it both the fourth-largest producer globally and the largest producer in the Americas.

The United States, Mexico, Peru, Brazil, Colombia, and Argentina also remained major contributors to global production.

Latin America continues to attract mining investment due to its rich geological reserves, though environmental concerns, regulatory changes, and political uncertainty remain important challenges for the sector.

Why Gold Production Matters

Gold production influences global financial markets, currency reserves, mining investment, and geopolitical strategy. Major producing countries often benefit from:

  • Increased export revenues
  • Stronger foreign exchange reserves
  • Employment growth in mining regions
  • Higher government royalties and taxes
  • Strategic influence in global commodity markets

At the same time, gold remains one of the world’s most important reserve assets for central banks and investors during periods of inflation, economic uncertainty, and geopolitical instability.

As global demand for gold continues to rise from central banks, investors, jewelry markets, and technology industries, competition among producing nations is likely to intensify in the years ahead.
