SoftBank Group founder Masayoshi Son reportedly explored acquiring AI chip startup Cerebras Systems ahead of its stock market debut, but the approach was rejected before the company’s explosive IPO rally.
Cerebras shares surged 89% during their U.S. market debut after pricing at $185 per share, giving the company a fully diluted valuation of roughly $106.8 billion. The AI chipmaker raised about $5.55 billion in the offering, significantly exceeding earlier expectations.
The failed takeover attempt highlights the intense investor enthusiasm surrounding artificial intelligence infrastructure companies, particularly semiconductor firms positioned as challengers to NVIDIA.
Cerebras claims its processors can generate AI chatbot outputs up to 15 times faster than Nvidia’s leading chips, positioning the company as a major player in the race to power next-generation AI systems.
The deal interest also aligned with SoftBank’s broader strategy of building an AI semiconductor empire around Arm Holdings. Since Arm’s public listing in 2023, SoftBank has expanded aggressively into AI hardware through acquisitions and investments, including Graphcore and Ampere Computing.
Cerebras also has deep ties to OpenAI, another major SoftBank investment. SoftBank currently owns a stake in OpenAI, while OpenAI itself holds warrants in Cerebras that could eventually increase to around 11% ownership.
The interconnected investments reflect a broader trend across the AI industry, where companies increasingly invest in customers, suppliers and infrastructure partners to strengthen ecosystem growth. Similar relationships exist between Nvidia, OpenAI and CoreWeave.
Despite the strategic fit, analysts argue that Cerebras’ soaring valuation likely made a takeover financially unattractive. Even assuming strong future revenue growth and industry-level margins comparable to Advanced Micro Devices, projected returns on an acquisition at current prices appear relatively modest.
The rally underscores how AI-driven market optimism continues to push semiconductor valuations sharply higher, making large-scale acquisitions increasingly difficult even for aggressive investors like SoftBank.
