Trump Downplays Russia’s “Unlimited Range” Nuclear Cruise Missile Amid Rising Tensions

Russia’s recent test of a nuclear-powered cruise missile, the 9M730 Burevestnik—codenamed ‘Skyfall’ by NATO—has drawn a cool response from U.S. President Donald Trump, even as tensions between the two countries rise. Announced on Sunday, the missile reportedly can carry conventional or nuclear warheads, maneuver mid-flight, and evade defense systems, with an effectively unlimited range. Speaking from Air Force One during his Asia tour, Trump criticized the missile launch, saying Russian President Vladimir Putin should focus on ending the war in Ukraine rather than testing weapons. He added that the U.S. already has nuclear submarines off Russia’s coast, making such long-range missiles unnecessary. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov defended the test, emphasizing Russia’s right to develop new weapons systems to ensure national security. The test, which coincided with Trump canceling talks with Putin in Hungary, saw the missile travel 14,000 kilometers (8,700 miles) over 15 hours, with Russian officials claiming this was not its maximum range. Putin praised the missile as a “unique product” unmatched globally, highlighting Russia’s intent to project military strength amid ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
