Amazon Prime Day Spending Tops $26 Billion as Shoppers Hunt for Deals

American consumers spent more than $26.4 billion during Amazon’s four-day Prime Day event, highlighting strong demand for discounts as households continue to deal with inflation and higher living costs.

According to Adobe Analytics, spending during the June 23–26 shopping event increased 9.3% from a year earlier, with shoppers focusing heavily on electronics, appliances, toys, personal care products, and household essentials.

Large discounts encouraged consumers to purchase higher-priced items that they may have postponed buying earlier in the year. Electronics, clothing, and toys all saw significant markdowns, helping retailers drive sales despite cautious consumer spending.

Analysts noted that higher tax refunds this year also provided shoppers with additional cash, boosting purchases of discretionary products. At the same time, many consumers used the sales event to stock up on back-to-school items, personal care products, and everyday essentials.

However, data also suggests shoppers remain price-sensitive. The average order value declined compared with last year, indicating that many consumers are carefully managing their budgets and seeking value rather than increasing overall spending.

Retail experts believe the strong Prime Day performance may encourage retailers to offer deeper discounts during the upcoming holiday shopping season as companies work to attract cautious consumers and clear inventory.

Overall, the results show that while consumer demand remains resilient, bargain hunting and promotional pricing continue to play a major role in driving retail sales.
