Malaysian low-cost long-haul carrier AirAsia X (AAX) is preparing to expand its footprint in Europe next year, following the successful launch of its new route connecting Kuala Lumpur and Istanbul, CEO Benyamin Ismail told Reuters on Monday.
The airline began operating direct flights to Istanbul on November 14, marking its return to the European market after the pandemic forced a major corporate restructuring and a suspension of long-haul routes.
Istanbul Route Marks Strategic Re-Entry Into Europe
AirAsia X currently operates four flights a week between Kuala Lumpur and Istanbul, providing more than 150,000 seats annually. According to Ismail, the airline plans to increase the service to daily flights, strengthening Istanbul as a key gateway.
Speaking on the sidelines of a press conference in Istanbul, Ismail said the company intends to use the Turkish hub to connect Asia with additional European destinations.
More European Cities on the Way
The airline plans to launch one or two new European routes each year, though Ismail did not specify which cities are being evaluated.
He emphasized that expanding into Europe is central to AirAsia X’s strategy to diversify beyond Asia and rebuild its long-haul network after the disruptions of COVID-19.
