OpenAI Limits GPT-5.6 Rollout Following U.S. Government Request

OpenAI announced a limited release of its new GPT-5.6 model family after a request from the U.S. government, highlighting growing concerns about advanced AI capabilities and national security.

The new series includes three models — Sol, Terra, and Luna — which will initially be available only to a small group of approved partners. OpenAI said the names of participating organizations have been shared with government officials, while a broader public launch is expected in the coming weeks.

The company emphasized that it does not believe government involvement in model releases should become a permanent standard, arguing that restricting access can delay the benefits of advanced AI for businesses, developers, researchers, and cybersecurity professionals.

The decision reflects increasing government scrutiny of powerful AI systems. Earlier this year, AI company Anthropic limited access to its most advanced models due to cybersecurity concerns, while the White House introduced a voluntary review process for high-capability AI systems.

The debate intensified after U.S. authorities imposed restrictions on certain advanced AI models over national security concerns, prompting discussions about export controls, cybersecurity risks, and international access to cutting-edge artificial intelligence.

OpenAI’s cautious rollout signals that the next generation of AI models may face greater oversight from regulators and governments. As AI systems become increasingly powerful, balancing innovation, security, and public access is likely to become one of the industry's biggest challenges.

The limited release of GPT-5.6 marks another step toward closer cooperation between AI companies and policymakers as governments seek to understand and manage the potential risks associated with advanced artificial intelligence.
