The charity foundation of Bill Gates no longer owns shares of Microsoft.
According to a recent filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the Gates Foundation Trust sold its remaining 7.7 million Microsoft shares during the first quarter of the year. At current market prices, the stake was valued at approximately $3.2 billion.
Just one year earlier, the trust held around 28.5 million Microsoft shares worth roughly $10.7 billion, representing about 26% of the foundation’s portfolio as of March 2025. The fund’s sole trustee is Bill Gates, although investments are managed by Cascade Asset Management.
Last year, Gates announced plans to gradually wind down the work of the Gates Foundation over the next two decades, with the organization intending to spend all of its assets during that period.
Microsoft shares have fallen around 11% this year, making the stock a major point of debate among high-profile investors.
Recently, billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman revealed that his fund had purchased Microsoft shares following the recent market pullback. Meanwhile, Chris Hohn and his firm, TCI Fund Management, reportedly reduced most of their $8 billion position in Microsoft.
The move marks the end of a decades-long connection between Bill Gates and the company he co-founded in 1975, as the foundation continues shifting its assets toward long-term philanthropic goals.
