Japan Post Holdings is setting a more aggressive growth strategy as it works to reduce reliance on its traditional postal operations and strengthen earnings from financial services and real estate.
The company announced a new medium-term plan targeting net income of ¥500 billion to ¥700 billion by the fiscal year ending March 2029, compared with ¥374.6 billion reported for the latest fiscal year. At the upper end, the target implies profit growth of as much as 87%, while return on equity could improve from 4.5% to as high as 7%.
Management said demographic challenges in Japan remain a major concern. The country’s shrinking and aging population continues to pressure postal and logistics demand, forcing the company to reshape its long-term business structure. As part of the plan, Japan Post intends to reduce its postal and logistics workforce by around 10,000 employees over the next three years, bringing total staffing in the segment to roughly 194,000 workers.
At the same time, the company plans to expand higher-margin businesses. Real estate operations are expected to play a larger role in earnings growth, with management targeting a 17% increase in segment profit to ¥28 billion during the plan period. Longer term, the company aims to raise real estate profit beyond ¥50 billion.
Chief Executive Officer Kazuyuki Negishi said a key variable in achieving the profit targets will be whether the company can revise postal service fees, making pricing reform a potentially important earnings catalyst.
Japan Post also signaled a stronger focus on strategic investments and shareholder returns. The company has allocated ¥300 billion for investments and acquisitions, with management open to increasing that amount if attractive opportunities emerge. In addition, the firm is preparing a share buyback program worth up to ¥150 billion, equivalent to roughly 3.6% of outstanding shares.
The restructuring effort comes as debate continues around the long-running privatization of Japan Post and the eventual reduction of its stakes in Japan Post Bank and Japan Post Insurance.
