Trump and Xi Hold Phone Call, Discuss Trade, Ukraine, and Taiwan

President Donald Trump spoke with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday morning, a White House official confirmed to CNBC. Specific details about the call, including who requested it or the precise topics discussed, were not immediately disclosed by the White House.

However, China’s Foreign Affairs Ministry stated that the call focused on implementing agreements reached during their recent meeting in Busan, South Korea. Those agreements included U.S. tariff reductions on Chinese goods and a pause on China’s new export controls on rare earth minerals, easing tensions in the ongoing trade war. Beijing added that the China-U.S. relationship has generally maintained a steady and positive trajectory since Busan.

The two leaders also discussed Ukraine, which is currently negotiating with the U.S. over a peace plan that the Trump administration hopes Kyiv will agree to by Thanksgiving. According to Beijing, Xi emphasized China’s support for all efforts conducive to peace.

On the sensitive issue of Taiwan, Xi reiterated China’s stance that the island should “return to China.” Trump acknowledged the significance of the Taiwan issue to China, stating that the U.S. understands its importance.

The Chinese foreign ministry also reported that Trump referred to Xi as “a great leader” during the call.

This phone conversation marks another moment of high-level engagement between the two countries amid ongoing trade, geopolitical, and regional security concerns.
