A key Tata Electronics facility that manufactures components for Apple's iPhone is facing regulatory scrutiny after pollution authorities in India alleged that wastewater from the plant contaminated nearby groundwater and agricultural land.
The facility, located in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, plays an important role in Apple's expanding manufacturing network in India. Tata Electronics is currently one of Apple's largest suppliers in the country and a critical partner in the company's efforts to diversify production beyond China.
Pollution Board Issues Warning
According to a notice issued by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, inspections conducted between December 2025 and May 2026 found that wastewater from the factory was allegedly discharged into a rainwater harvesting pond within the facility.
Regulators claim the pond overflowed, resulting in contamination of groundwater and open wells located on nearby agricultural land. The notice also stated that Tata had failed to implement corrective measures outlined in an earlier communication from pollution authorities.
As a result, the regulator asked the company to explain why the plant should not face penalties, including a potential shutdown and suspension of power supply.
Tata Rejects Allegations
Tata Electronics said it commissioned an independent study through an accredited laboratory and that the findings showed the company was fully compliant with environmental regulations.
The company stated that it remains committed to responsible business practices, environmental protection, and supporting local communities. Tata also confirmed that it has submitted a response to the pollution authorities.
Potential Impact on Apple's Supply Chain
The investigation comes at a sensitive time for Apple as it continues expanding its manufacturing footprint in India.
The Hosur facility produces back panels and other critical iPhone components, making it an important part of Apple's global supply chain. Any disruption to operations could draw attention from investors monitoring Apple's production diversification strategy.
Apple has established strict environmental standards for suppliers, including requirements governing wastewater treatment and environmental compliance.
Challenges for Apple's India Operations
The latest development adds to a series of operational challenges affecting Apple's suppliers in India in recent years.
Previous incidents have included factory fires at supplier facilities and labor-related controversies within the broader supply chain. Despite these setbacks, India has rapidly become one of Apple's most important manufacturing hubs.
Industry estimates suggest India could account for more than a quarter of global iPhone production in 2026, a dramatic increase from just a few years ago.
Outlook
The outcome of the regulatory investigation could have implications for Tata Electronics, local communities, and Apple's growing manufacturing ecosystem in India.
For now, the company maintains that it complies with all environmental regulations, while authorities continue reviewing the allegations and determining whether further action is necessary.
