Smaran Ravichandran: Karnataka’s Rising Star Making a Methodical Climb Through Domestic Cricket

Smaran Ravichandran’s rise in Karnataka cricket has been steady and deliberate rather than sudden. At just 22, the left-hander has shown remarkable consistency across formats, building on a foundation laid long before his first-class debut. This Ranji Trophy season, he has already recorded two double hundreds, adding to the one he scored in his debut season, reflecting a trajectory rooted in disciplined preparation and methodical growth.

Since debuting in October 2024, Smaran has amassed nearly 1,200 runs in 13 matches, including four centuries, three of them doubles. His performances in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Maharaja Trophy, Duleep Trophy, and Ranji Trophy highlight his adaptability and refinement, showcasing a player capable of shifting gears seamlessly across formats.

Smaran credits much of his success to mindset and preparation. “I always had the game to score big runs. The shift in mindset was just to grind it out, out there in the middle. At the elite level, you have to work really hard for your runs,” he says. His disciplined approach stems from balancing academic excellence with age-group cricket, instilling habits of focus, patience, and determination from a young age.

Guided by his coach Syed Zabiulla, Smaran developed a match-specific understanding of innings. Training routines segmented matches into phases—starting like a Test opener, progressing like a one-day batter, and finishing with T20 intensity. This structure honed his ability to bat long, accelerate when needed, and read the game’s flow, skills that now define his domestic performances.

Fitness, recovery, and adaptability between formats have also been central to his evolution. Smaran emphasizes how off-season sessions and strength programs, alongside guidance from Invictus Performance Lab, have equipped him to manage the rigors of a packed domestic calendar.

His IPL experience with Sunrisers Hyderabad, even as a replacement player, offered exposure to top-level T20 strategies and insights from international stars. “Just seeing them from 10-20 meters distance was a great privilege,” Smaran recalls, highlighting the learning opportunities that shaped his approach to modern cricket.

This season, Smaran has focused on converting starts into substantial innings, exhibiting calculated risk-taking and tempered shot selection. The analytical scrutiny of domestic cricket, with AI-assisted video analysis and strategic planning by opponents, underscores the importance of adaptability and continuous improvement for his next phase.

Coach Syed Zabiulla emphasizes that staying grounded and disciplined will be key for Smaran as he faces increasing competition. “The learning is there. People will try to find your weaknesses. The only thing is to work on the mindset—take your strength to the next level by converting your weaknesses into strength,” he says.

From school cricket to Ranji double hundreds, a mid-season IPL call-up, and retention by Sunrisers Hyderabad, Smaran’s rise has been deliberate, methodical, and guided by thoughtful preparation. As he sums it up: “Every match teaches you something new, and that's what keeps me going.”
