Sibanye-Stillwater Settles $215 Million Dispute with Appian Capital Advisory

Sibanye-Stillwater, the South African mining company, announced that it has agreed to pay $215 million to settle a dispute with private-equity firm Appian Capital Advisory over the termination of an acquisition of stakes in two Brazilian mining companies.

The settlement was reached ahead of a trial that was scheduled to begin on Monday. The total includes £5 million ($6.6 million) in legal fees already incurred, according to Sibanye.

The dispute originated from the 2022 termination of Sibanye’s acquisition deal for shares in Atlantic Nickel and Mineracao Vale Verde from Appian. Appian had previously sought to recover its losses from the $1.2 billion transaction, including interest.

Executives from both companies stated that the settlement is in the best interests of their respective shareholders, allowing both parties to avoid prolonged litigation.
