PM Sushila Karki Prepares for Dialogue with Top Political Leaders Amid Rising Tensions

Prime Minister Sushila Karki, who had earlier refused to engage in discussions with top political leaders saying she “did not even want to see their faces,” has now reconsidered her stance. According to sources close to the Prime Minister’s Office, she has initiated preparations to hold dialogue with senior leaders of major political parties to create a conducive environment for the upcoming elections.

Sources confirmed that PM Karki has instructed her secretariat to begin groundwork for meetings with UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli, Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, Maoist Centre Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, Rastriya Prajatantra Party Chairman Rajendra Lingden, Rastriya Swatantra Party acting President DP Aryal, and leaders of other political parties. The secretariat has already begun internal preparations, and formal discussion programs are expected soon.

In recent weeks, rising clashes—particularly between UML and the GenZ groups—have raised concerns about escalating conflict in the country. The confrontation in Bara, the attempted attack on UML leader Mahesh Basnet in Biratnagar, and UML’s public announcement that its “People’s Volunteers” are prepared for confrontation have all contributed to a tense political atmosphere. Meanwhile, GenZ-affiliated figures, including Sudhan Gurung, have been issuing threats against UML leaders.

With both sides exchanging threats of physical confrontation, the situation has become increasingly volatile. This growing instability is believed to have prompted PM Karki to adopt a more flexible approach and move toward dialogue with top leaders. She has reportedly been holding informal discussions with second-tier leaders to prepare the ground for formal talks.

Sources also indicated that effective dialogue requires willingness from all major political leaders, not just the Prime Minister. Therefore, efforts are underway to create a favorable environment for comprehensive political talks.

At present, the investigation commission formed in connection with the GenZ movement is preparing to record statements from former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and former Home Minister and Congress leader Ramesh Lekhak. Anticipating possible legal scrutiny, Oli has become increasingly aggressive toward PM Karki and the current government, even questioning the legitimacy of the upcoming elections.

In this sensitive climate, PM Karki’s decision to initiate dialogue with top party leaders is seen as a significant and meaningful step toward reducing tensions and restoring political stability in the country.
