Kedah Sultan Urges Universities to Remain Free from Political Influence

The Sultan of Kedah, Al Aminul Karim Sultan Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah, has called on all parties to ensure that institutions of higher learning are not turned into platforms for political activities.

Speaking at the 38th Convocation Ceremony of Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) held at Dewan Mu’adzam Shah today, His Royal Highness reminded that universities are sacred spaces for acquiring and advancing knowledge, not for spreading slander or political agendas.

“If knowledge is used as a tool for politics and slander, it will destroy public trust and hinder the future of the coming generations,” the Sultan cautioned.

He urged all stakeholders to unite in safeguarding the integrity of Malaysia’s institutions of higher learning, ensuring they remain grounded in truth and uphold the highest ethical standards.

Sultan Sallehuddin, who also serves as the Chancellor of UUM, emphasised that universities should function as bridges of unity rather than walls of division.

Expressing his pride in UUM’s progress, the Sultan noted the university’s impressive global standing — ranked 491st in the world — and commended its commitment to excellence in education and innovation.

He also congratulated the 6,832 graduates who will be receiving their degrees across nine convocation sessions running from today until November 13.

In his concluding remarks, Sultan Sallehuddin advised the graduates to use their knowledge wisely and strive to become individuals who foster unity and contribute positively to society.
