Hindustan Zinc and Tata Steel Partner to Promote Low-Carbon Zinc in Steel Production

Hindustan Zinc Ltd and Tata Steel announced on Monday, March 23, a partnership to expand the use of Hindustan Zinc’s low-carbon zinc product, EcoZen, in steel manufacturing, aiming to reduce emissions across the value chain.

The collaboration will integrate EcoZen, produced using renewable energy, into Tata Steel’s operations, supporting climate-aligned sourcing and sustainable industrial practices. EcoZen has a carbon footprint of less than one tonne of CO₂ equivalent per tonne of zinc—about 75% lower than the global industry average. Hindustan Zinc estimates that using EcoZen can save roughly 400 kg of CO₂ per tonne of steel galvanized compared with conventional zinc.

“EcoZen represents our vision to offer sustainable metal solutions… Our partnership with Tata Steel is a significant milestone in scaling up the adoption of low-carbon zinc,” said Arun Misra, CEO of Hindustan Zinc. Tata Steel’s Chief Procurement Officer Ranjan Sinha added that the collaboration reflects a shared commitment to advancing green technologies across the supply chain.

Zinc is commonly used in galvanizing steel to enhance durability and corrosion resistance in sectors such as infrastructure, automotive, and renewable energy. By reducing emissions at the raw material stage, the partnership aims to help customers lower Scope 3 emissions and improve overall sustainability performance.

The initiative builds on a long-standing relationship of over two decades and aligns with broader efforts to support India’s transition to low-carbon industrial growth.

On Monday, Hindustan Zinc shares were down nearly 5% at ₹489.10, while Tata Steel fell 4.42% to ₹188.07 as of midday trading.
