Coinbase Ventures Targets Real-World Assets, DeFi, and AI for 2026 Investments

Coinbase Ventures, the venture capital arm of America’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, has outlined its strategic investment focus for 2026, emphasizing real-world asset trading, decentralized finance (DeFi), and artificial intelligence (AI).

In a recent blog post, the firm stated that it will actively seek startups and projects in asset tokenization, specialized exchanges and trading terminals, next-generation DeFi protocols, and agentic AI developments. “These are the categories where we believe the next big breakout companies and protocols will emerge,” the firm said.

Since its inception in 2018, Coinbase Ventures has made 618 investments and maintains a portfolio of 422 startups, according to PitchBook. Recent deals include DeFi compliance platform 0xbow (Nov. 18), payment infrastructure firms Zynk and ZAR, and the prediction markets platform Kalshi in October.

Focus on Real-World Assets and DeFi Innovation

Coinbase Ventures highlighted interest in new forms of exposure to real-world assets, such as perpetual futures contracts, which allow traders to gain synthetic exposure to off-chain assets. The firm also anticipates the rise of prop-AMMs—proprietary automated market makers that protect liquidity providers from sophisticated trader exploitation.

Investors at Coinbase Ventures predict the emergence of prediction market aggregators to consolidate fragmented liquidity and provide a unified view of real-time event odds across multiple venues. Additionally, integration of perpetual futures with other DeFi protocols, including lending, could improve capital efficiency by allowing traders to earn yields on collateral while maintaining leveraged positions.

Privacy-preserving tools and assets, such as Zcash (ZEC), are also expected to gain momentum, alongside DeFi protocols blending on-chain reputation with off-chain data to enable large-scale unsecured borrowing. Coinbase Ventures highlighted the U.S. market alone contains $1.3 trillion in revolving, unsecured credit lines that could benefit from crypto-enabled solutions.

Agentic AI, DePIN, and Proof of Humanity

On the AI front, Coinbase Ventures predicts growth in agentic AI, which empowers non-technical founders to launch on-chain businesses efficiently. These AI agents could manage smart contract code generation, security audits, and continuous monitoring.

The firm also highlighted Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks (DePIN) as a framework for scaling high-quality physical interaction data for robotics. Furthermore, proof of humanity solutions—combining biometrics, cryptographic signing, and open standards—are expected to grow, helping differentiate human users from AI-generated content.

Looking Ahead

Coinbase Ventures’ investment strategy signals a strong push toward integrating crypto, DeFi, and AI innovations, aiming to capture opportunities across both digital and real-world markets. With these focus areas, 2026 could see significant breakthroughs in capital efficiency, privacy, and AI-driven on-chain business development.
