CME Sees Strong Demand for 24/7 Crypto Derivatives Trading

Global derivatives exchange CME Group reported strong early demand for its newly launched 24/7 cryptocurrency futures and options market, as trading activity over its first weekend showed meaningful investor participation.

According to the company, more than 7,200 contracts were traded over the weekend, representing roughly $50 million in notional value. The launch marks a significant expansion of CME’s digital asset offering, which began with bitcoin futures in 2017 and has since evolved into a broader crypto derivatives suite.

The move is designed to meet growing demand from institutional traders who increasingly require continuous access to crypto markets, which operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. CME executives said the new model helps bridge the gap between traditional regulated financial infrastructure and the nonstop nature of digital asset trading.

CME’s Global Head of Equities, FX and Alternative Products, Tim McCourt, said the shift toward continuous trading represents a “natural evolution” of the marketplace, as clients increasingly expect uninterrupted access and deeper liquidity.

The exchange also highlighted the scale of its crypto business, noting that average daily open interest in its digital asset products exceeded $31 billion in 2025, reflecting growing institutional engagement.

On Monday, CME further expanded its offerings by launching 24/7 trading for bitcoin volatility futures, allowing investors to take positions on expected swings in bitcoin’s 30-day implied volatility—another step toward a fully always-on regulated crypto derivatives ecosystem.
