Chinese Gaming Goes Global: “Where Winds Meet” and the Rise of Cultural Exports

China’s gaming industry continues its rapid push onto the global stage. The martial arts-themed game “Where Winds Meet”, published by NetEase, drew over 2 million players within 24 hours of its overseas release on PlayStation and PC. Set in 10th-century China, the game lets players step into the shoes of a young sword master, blending history, culture, and interactive storytelling.

The global success follows earlier hits such as Tencent-backed “Black Myth: Wukong”, which sold 10 million units in three days, and the long-running mobile phenomenon “Honor of Kings”, which averages 139 million daily players in China and 260 million monthly globally. Its live championship in Beijing’s Bird’s Nest stadium set a Guinness World Record with 62,000 attendees, doubling last year’s audience.

Experts say Chinese companies must go global because hardcore PC and console gamers are primarily overseas. Investors are taking notice: firms like BAI Capital are betting on gaming alongside AI and semiconductor ventures, while Saudi Arabia’s Savvy Games is exploring both Western mobile games and opportunities in Chinese smartphone gaming.

The industry benefits from massive capital, risk tolerance, and talent, favoring giants like Tencent and NetEase. Tencent, for instance, reported 43% year-on-year international games revenue growth, nearly one-third of its total gaming revenue, highlighting the global appetite for Chinese gaming content.

Despite the cultural specificity, games like “Where Winds Meet” are succeeding internationally, aided by translation and engaging narratives. Reviews on Steam are overwhelmingly positive, praising graphics and storytelling, and the game ranks among the top five global titles.

The broader takeaway: as technology reduces barriers and global interest grows, Chinese games are emerging as a significant cultural export, blending entertainment, national heritage, and commercial opportunity.
