Bitcoin Falls Below $70,000 as Strategy’s First BTC Sale Sparks Market Jitters

Bitcoin slipped sharply on Tuesday, falling around 4% and trading below $70,000 as investors reacted to news that Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) had reduced its Bitcoin holdings for the first time in more than three years.

The decline came after Strategy disclosed that it sold 32 BTC between May 26 and May 31 at an average price of $77,135 per coin, totaling about $2.5 million. Although the sale is small relative to its overall holdings—still 843,706 BTC—it marked a symbolic shift for one of the crypto market’s most influential corporate buyers.

The reaction was immediate across trading desks, with investors interpreting the move as a potential break in Strategy’s long-standing accumulation pattern. For years, the company has been viewed as a consistent source of demand in the Bitcoin market, and even minor deviations from that strategy tend to trigger heightened volatility.

Market participants also pointed to broader concerns about Strategy’s leveraged balance sheet structure and the implications of reduced accumulation during periods of price stress. Bitcoin was last trading around $69,812, with sentiment on retail trading platforms turning firmly bearish as volatility picked up.

Analysts are divided on the interpretation of the sale. Some view it as a sign of weakening conviction among major holders, while others argue it may reflect prudent treasury management. One on-chain analyst suggested the move could reduce future liquidation risk by showing willingness to sell before financial stress becomes acute.

The discussion has also revived debate over Strategy’s role in the Bitcoin ecosystem. Critics argue that its large holdings and market influence amplify volatility, while supporters see the firm as a long-term institutional anchor for crypto adoption.

Bearish sentiment intensified further as technical analysts pointed to breakdown patterns in Bitcoin’s chart structure, with some suggesting potential downside targets ranging from $62,000 in a corrective scenario to as low as $50,000 in a more severe downturn case.
