Amazon Web Services (AWS) has disclosed for the first time the total amount of water consumed by its global data center operations, revealing that its facilities withdrew approximately 2.5 billion gallons of water in 2025.
The announcement marks a significant step toward greater transparency as technology companies face growing scrutiny over the environmental impact of rapidly expanding artificial intelligence and cloud computing infrastructure.
AWS Reports Major Water Efficiency Gains
AWS reported a Water Usage Effectiveness (WUE) rating of 0.12 liters per kilowatt-hour, representing a 52% improvement since 2021. According to the company, this level of efficiency is roughly seven times better than the industry average of 0.84 liters per kilowatt-hour.
Despite continuing to expand its global data center footprint, AWS said water withdrawals at directly owned and operated facilities declined by 2% compared to the previous year.
The company attributed much of the improvement to increased use of advanced air-cooling technologies, which reduce the need for water-intensive cooling systems that are commonly used in large-scale data centers.
Why Data Centers Need Water
Water plays a critical role in cooling servers and networking equipment that power cloud computing services and artificial intelligence applications.

AWS noted that approximately two-thirds of the water it withdraws is returned through community water replenishment and infrastructure projects designed to improve local water availability.

Amazon has pledged to become "water positive" by the end of the decade, meaning it aims to return more water to communities and ecosystems than it consumes across its operations.
