Airlines Race to Fix Airbus A320 Software Glitch Ahead of Busy U.S. Weekend

Global, November 2025 – Airlines worldwide scrambled to update software on Airbus A320 jets after a partial recall grounded hundreds of flights in Asia and Europe, ahead of the busy Thanksgiving travel weekend in the U.S.

Key points:

  • The recall affected 6,000 planes, over half of the global A320-family fleet. Airlines including American, United, Delta, Air India, Wizz Air, Volaris, Air Arabia, Flyadeal, and Taiwan carriers completed or nearly finished updates by Saturday. JetBlue reported about 70 flight cancellations.
  • The recall followed an October 30 JetBlue incident involving an unintended loss of altitude, which injured 10 passengers. Investigators are probing the incident.
  • Airlines must revert software in the flight control system affecting nose angle, and in some older planes, modify hardware. Each jet requires 2–3 hours for the fix before flying passengers.
  • Global operations were largely maintained, with moderate delays reported. Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury apologized, calling the recall “necessary for safety.”
  • The software update coincided with a period when many airlines were winding down schedules, which helped limit disruptions.

Despite the disruption, industry experts noted that the recall’s timing and the overnight effort by airlines prevented widespread chaos, though some short-term operational headaches remain.
