Journalists and Media Employees to Be Included Under Social Security

Journalists and media employees will now be brought under the Social Security Fund in Nepal. This announcement was made during a program organized at Singha Durbar on Thursday. The event formally informed that the process of enrolling journalists and media workers into the social security system has begun.

Speaking at the program, Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Jagadish Kharel, stated that major media institutions under the ministry—Gorkhapatra Corporation, National News Agency (RSS), Radio Nepal and Nepal Television under Public Service Broadcasting (PSP), the Press Council Nepal, and the Minimum Wage Determination Committee—have already started the process of joining the social security system.

Minister Kharel said that journalists, media workers, and employees of state-owned media organizations across the country will now come under formal social security protection. He added that in the coming days, a comprehensive plan will be implemented to systematically include all journalists and media workers in the social security mechanism. According to him, the government has made professional, economic, and social security of journalists a priority agenda, and this step marks significant progress toward that goal.

He further stated, “On the occasion of the 8th Social Security Day, we have begun implementing social security in the institutions under the Ministry of Communication, including Gorkhapatra, RSS, Radio Nepal, Nepal Television, Press Council, and the Minimum Wage Determination Committee. A memorandum of understanding has been signed today between the Social Security Fund and these institutions. This marks the beginning of bringing all journalists, media workers, and employees under the Social Security system, and additional work will continue ahead.”

Minister Kharel also encouraged private media organizations to join the social security system, expressing hope that they will participate enthusiastically in this initiative.
