Nepal Government to Raise Investment for Upper Arun Hydropower Project Through Diaspora Shares

The Government of Nepal is planning to raise investment for the 1,063 MW Upper Arun Hydropower Project by offering shares to Nepali citizens living abroad. This initiative aims to involve the Nepali diaspora in one of the country’s major national priority projects.

Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Kulman Ghising announced that the government will mobilize investment from Nepalis residing overseas by issuing project shares. He stated during an interview that the project is being developed with the vision of making overseas Nepalis a key financial partner.

According to Minister Ghising, “We are planning to develop this project with the investment of Nepalis living both inside and outside the country. Those who have been sending remittance will be given the opportunity to invest through shares.”

He further shared that the investment modality of the project is in its final phase. Financial closure is also expected to be completed soon. The necessary capital for the project will be arranged through domestic investment, concessional loans from development partners, and primarily through share investment from the Nepali diaspora.

A significant portion of the financing will come from Nepalis living abroad, who will be allowed to invest in the project through remittance-based share purchases. The project has already completed major groundwork, including land acquisition and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) procedures.

With an estimated cost of NPR 230 billion, the government aims to move the project forward within the current fiscal year. The Upper Arun Hydropower Project will be constructed in Sankhuwasabha district, and the target is to complete it within six years after construction begins.

This approach not only supports Nepal’s goal of increasing domestic energy production but also strengthens the emotional and economic connection between the country and its diaspora community.
