Intel Corporation shares surged in premarket trading after comments from U.S. President Donald Trump suggested that Apple Inc. has agreed to collaborate with the chipmaker on designing and manufacturing semiconductors in the United States, reinforcing Washington’s push to rebuild domestic chip production capacity.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the Apple–Intel partnership marks another step in broader federal efforts to strengthen the U.S. semiconductor industry, which has received policy support including a government stake in Intel announced last year. Following the remarks, Intel shares climbed sharply, reaching levels that would mark a record closing high if sustained through the session.
Apple and Intel have reportedly been in discussions for more than a year over potential manufacturing arrangements, including plans for Intel to produce chips used in Apple devices, according to earlier industry reports. While neither company confirmed the latest development, the market reaction reflected investor optimism that Intel could secure high-profile customers as it seeks to revive its foundry business.
The news comes amid broader pressure on the global semiconductor supply chain, where rising demand for advanced chips—driven largely by artificial intelligence and data center expansion—has pushed up input costs. Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook has previously indicated that higher memory and storage chip costs could force price increases for Apple products. Meanwhile, Intel, once the dominant force in global chipmaking, has struggled in recent years to keep pace with rivals such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company and Samsung, following years of manufacturing delays and strategic missteps. The company is now attempting a turnaround under CEO Lip-Bu Tan, with renewed political and commercial support aimed at restoring its competitiveness in both chip design and manufacturing.
