South Korea’s stock market is edging closer to a milestone investors have awaited for years, as the country prepares for MSCI’s upcoming market-classification review on June 23. The review could determine whether South Korea is placed on the watchlist for eventual promotion to developed-market status.
The move comes amid a remarkable surge in Korean equities. The Kospi Index has become one of the world’s best-performing major stock benchmarks this year, driven largely by soaring demand for artificial intelligence-related stocks, particularly semiconductor giants Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix.
MSCI Upgrade Remains a Long-Term Goal
While most investors and strategists expect South Korea to remain classified as an emerging market for now, many believe an eventual upgrade is increasingly likely.
Analysts point to recent reforms, including the restoration of short selling and plans to extend won trading hours, as important steps toward improving market accessibility for foreign investors. These reforms address concerns that previously prevented MSCI from upgrading the country.
AI Boom Driving Market Momentum
South Korea's market has become heavily linked to the global AI investment theme. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix together account for more than half of the Kospi's weighting, making the market a key destination for investors seeking exposure to AI infrastructure and semiconductor demand.
Many portfolio managers argue that Korea's importance in global semiconductor supply chains now extends beyond traditional emerging-market classifications.
Potential Benefits of MSCI Promotion
An eventual MSCI upgrade could attract significant foreign investment. Some estimates suggest that inclusion in developed-market indices could bring approximately $30 billion in new capital inflows as global funds adjust their portfolios.
The reclassification could also help reduce the long-standing "Korea Discount" — the tendency for Korean stocks to trade at lower valuations than peers in developed markets despite strong fundamentals.
Volatility Remains a Concern
Despite the rally, Korean stocks have experienced sharp swings in recent weeks. The market has repeatedly triggered volatility controls as rapid gains in major technology stocks created heightened trading activity.
Foreign investors have also been significant sellers this year after large gains in semiconductor stocks pushed some funds beyond their allocation limits.
Outlook
Although South Korea may not secure immediate developed-market watchlist status this month, investors increasingly view the upgrade as a question of "when" rather than "if." As market reforms continue and the country's role in the global AI supply chain expands, South Korea appears well-positioned to strengthen its standing among the world's leading financial markets.
