SpaceX’s blockbuster stock market debut has captured global attention, with billionaire banker Uday Kotak describing the company’s listing as a “true test for capitalism” and a major bet on humanity’s future.
The comments came after SpaceX shares surged 19% on their first day of trading on the Nasdaq, closing at $161 after pricing its IPO at $135 per share. The rally pushed the company’s market valuation to approximately $2.1 trillion, making it one of the world’s most valuable publicly traded firms.
Reacting to the debut, Kotak said SpaceX’s valuation cannot be explained using traditional financial metrics and instead reflects investor confidence in the company’s long-term vision.
“SpaceX IPO, listing, and beyond, is a true test for capitalism. The valuation does not fit any traditional matrix and is a huge bet on the future course of planet Earth,” Kotak wrote on X.
He added that only time will determine whether the company represents a transformative technological breakthrough or a speculative market bubble.
Kotak also praised SpaceX founder Elon Musk, highlighting both his entrepreneurial journey and the environment that allowed such innovation to flourish. He noted that Musk’s success demonstrates how ambitious ideas can create enormous value despite significant risks.
The IPO also marked another historic milestone for Musk. Following SpaceX’s strong market debut, the entrepreneur became the world’s first trillionaire based on the combined value of his holdings in SpaceX and Tesla.
Regulatory filings showed Musk owned billions of SpaceX shares before the listing, with his stake valued at roughly $750 billion based on the stock’s opening price. Combined with his Tesla holdings, his net worth surpassed the $1 trillion mark.
Speaking on the day of the IPO, Musk reiterated SpaceX’s long-term mission of making space travel accessible to ordinary people rather than just professional astronauts.
The successful debut has further strengthened investor enthusiasm surrounding space technology, artificial intelligence, and next-generation innovation, while raising broader questions about how markets value companies focused on transforming the future.
As SpaceX begins life as a public company, investors will closely watch whether the company can justify its record-breaking valuation and deliver on its ambitious vision of expanding humanity’s presence beyond Earth.
